A list of publications by Linus Pauling dealing with aspects of his Close-Packed Spheron Model of the atomic nucleus.

On October 15, 1965, Dr. Linus Pauling (the only scientist in history to receive two unshared Nobel Prizes) first published his Close-Packed Spheron Model of the atomic nucleus in two well respected journals, Science, and Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci.  For nearly 30 years (until 1994) Dr. Pauling published numerous papers on his cluster model, a number of which I have listed below.  This list was compiled by information posted on the web page of R. W. Gray (see this link), as well as papers added by the Webmaster.   Images of papers are from the Oregon State University Linus Pauling web page and are presented for educational purposes only with kind permission from the OSU Library (note: these images are copyright protected and may not be reproduced without permission of Oregon State University  Special Collection Library).

Of great mystery is the fact that no modern text books of nuclear physics discuss the Pauling Spheron Model, yet it provides a unique perspective, well published over a period of 29 years in the leading journals of science, on how "clusters of nucleons" can form shell structure in agreement with recognized theory of quantum mechanics !  Dr. Pauling was well versed in quantum mechanics--he coauthored one of the first textbooks on the subject (Introduction to Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Chemistry by Linus Pauling, E. Bright Wilson, 1935).

Because the Brightsen Nucleon Cluster Model in many ways mirrors and expands on the Pauling Spheron Model, it is suggested that a formal understanding of cluster dynamics in the Brightsen Model (e.g., how clusters bind to each other in light and heavy nuclides) would benefit by careful study of the following papers of Linus Pauling  Comments are welcome.
